data discovery and data reuse

This resource is designed for teachers to get students to think about data and numbers, teach them how to interpret, analyse and visualise data. This will be done by answering questions such as what proportion of the British public opposes capital punishment, how have attitudes about gender roles changed over the last 30 years and how have levels of crime changed in the last few decades. 

This Train-the-Trainers (TTT) package forms an addition to the CESSDA Data Management Expert Guide which was developed by the CESSDA Training Working Group in 2017 and 2018.

This package contains different materials that trainers can use in developing and giving Research Data Management and Discovery trainings for (social science) researchers.

Materials for instance include workshop outlines, slides and exercises that can be reused and adapted by local RDM trainers. The package contains five different types of materials: Workshop Outlines, Exercises, Presentations, Documents and Handouts, and Images. 

Chapter on the process of data discovery and reuse, including evaluating data quality. For discovering high-quality data, curated lists of different types of social science data sources in Europe and around the world are presented.

• set up - and adjust - a search strategy to find suitable data for your research purposes
• social science data repositories as sources for discovering social science data
• data sources which CESSDA-experts recommend for selected research topics
• evaluating the quality and usefulness of data for secondary analysis
• different types and modes of access to data
• relevant DMP questions on this topic

This source includes interactive modules designed for users who want to get to grips with key aspects of survey, longitudinal and aggregate data as well as tools that can be used to assess and improve data quality. 

Modules can be conducted in your own time and you are able to dip in and out when needed. The modules give an introduction to key aspects of the data using short instructional videos, interactive quizzes and activities using open access software where possible. Tools include guides, documentation and exercises.
