|GATE Training Course||
The training materials are all based around teaching the use of GATE, a freely available open-source toolkit for Natural Language Processing that has been widely used in both academia and industry for many different tasks.
The modules provide instruction on how to get to grips with the GATE toolkit for basic language processing, as well as more advanced techniques, and include a number of different scenarios, such as processing social media, hate speech and misinformation detection. They include modules both for programmers who want to further develop their own tools within the toolkit, and for non-programmers who want to just make use of existing tools. The modules teach not only the use of GATE itself, but also how to adapt it to one’s own needs (for example, to adapt English tools to a different language, or how to customise existing tools), and also the basic concepts around a number of language processing tasks including both low-level (tokenisation, POS tagging, parsing) to more sophisticated (information extraction, social media analysis, hate speech detection, misinformation detection), as well as how to interpret and integrate the results of the processing. Finally, it teaches programmers how to extend the toolkit itself, by adding new tools or integrating it into other systems.

This teaching resource provides instructors and students with materials designed to assist in teaching qualitative interviewing.
Interviewing is a frequently used method in social research with its suitability being entirely dependent on the particular research question. Qualitative interviewing is generally distinguished from questionnaire-based interviewing, even if the form of communication, such as face-to face conversation, may be the same.
The resource provides brief summaries of several different interviewing techniques and each summary is accompanied by full transcripts or excerpts and the interview schedule (or guidance notes). It concludes with selected references and practical suggestions for how to use the materials for teaching.

This resource provides brief summaries of some of the different ways in which researchers can collect qualitative data, including focus groups, diaries, online data collection, and visual methods. Each summary is accompanied by an illustrative data sample from the extensive collections held by the UK Data Archive.

This is a five-week course for individuals that support researchers to manage and share their data, including librarians, IT and information specialists, data stewards, and research office staff. You’ll discover common research support services, how to create data management plans, and how to develop your own research data management roadmap. You will learn from experts in the field from the internationally-recognised Digital Curation Centre and Research Data Netherlands and build your confidence in supporting researchers and preserving data. This course has been certified by the CPD Certification Service as conforming to continuing professional development principles.
QAMyData is an easy-to-use, open source tool that provides a health check for numeric data. The tool uses automated methods to detect and report on some of the most common problems in survey or numeric data, such as missingness, duplication, outliers and direct identifiers.
The tool offers a number of configurable tests that have been categorised into four types: file, metadata, data integrity, and identifiers, which can be run on popular file formats, including SPSS, Stata, SAS and CSV. A standard config file has default settings for each test, such as a threshold for pass or fail on various tests (e.g. detect value label that are truncated, email addresses identified as a string, or undefined missing values) which can be easily adapted to meet the user’s own desired thresholds. The configuration feature allows the creation of a unique Data Quality Profile. The software creates a ‘data health check’ that details errors and issues as both a summary and detailed report, providing a location of the failed test. New tests can easily be added. Data depositors and publishers can act on the results and resubmit the file until a clean bill of health is produced.
|Orion Open Science project||
ORION - Open Responsible research and Innovation to further Outstanding kNowledge is a 4-year project (runs from May 2017 to September 2021) that has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Science with and for Society (SWAFS) Work Programme. The main aim of the SWAFS Programme is to build effective cooperation between science and society. Open science is a core strategy of the European Commission that involves widening participation and collaboration as well as sharing research processes and outcomes to improve research and innovation.

This source includes interactive modules designed for users who want to get to grips with key aspects of survey, longitudinal and aggregate data as well as tools that can be used to assess and improve data quality.
Modules can be conducted in your own time and you are able to dip in and out when needed. The modules give an introduction to key aspects of the data using short instructional videos, interactive quizzes and activities using open access software where possible. Tools include guides, documentation and exercises.
